i decided i wanted a drip coffee pot that dripped into a thermal pot. i did a lot of research and found the exact one i wanted (OXO 8 cup). i went to order it on Amazon and for some weird reason their delivery time was like 12 days???? what is this, 1980??

my impatience did not pay off. i found it on a site called everything kitchen - they said they would have it here by friday (yesterday). they shipped it fine but, apparently, bought the cheaper fedex service. the one that delivers whenever.

they did not deliver yesterday but said they would deliver today which, of course, they did not do. they are saying they will deliver tomorrow but i know better. i'll be lucky to get it monday.

meanwhile had i waited a day, amazon would have had it to me yesterday - no prob.

at goodwill, i found just what i was after (a platter for the cats' water fountain) but also found a cuisinart dip coffee pot - bigger than i want and kind of banged up but for $10. why the hell not. plus when i got to the cashier she rang up the platter but not the coffee pot. 'girl, that pots' a mess. let's just go with the plate.' OKdokey

at home, the coffee pot plug is way too close to the knife rack. i went to unplug the pot and my right hand slammed right into a very sharp knife.

what a mess. blood was spurting all over everywhere. the wound was on the back of my right hand. my left hand is useless. the cats were fascinated. i finally got it stopped, i thought, and went into the bedroom to get a bandaid. of course, it started gushing all over again. now i have blood all over the kitchen and on the carpet and on the shelf. and i can't get the bandaid out of the packaging!

finally all got fixed and cleaned except one kitchen towel which is probably stained forever.

oh and on the way home from goodwill i ordered a sandwich from subway. when i got there it was packed but there was a package labeled SUSAN on the pickup rack so i grabbed it and left. now... either they really got my order wrong or i stole SUSAN's sandwich. i enjoyed the one i got but it sure wasn't what i ordered. weird.

and - having to do with none of this but fascinating to me - i learned on cook's kitchen (pbs) last night that eggs purchased in us groceries, if refrigerated are good for up to 3 or 4 months! i always have known from experience that they last a really long time but not that long. excellent info.

lunch break is over. i think i'll go clean out this mess of a $10 coffee pot and see what it can do.

Excellent score at Goodwill. I always enjoy my little finds.

I too sometimes let me eggs sit for a while. Good to know they last that long.

Wow, 3-4 months? I know it was a while, but that's great.

Oh wow

Glad you're okay! This might work for your things: https://www.thecleaningcollective.co.uk/news/how-to-guides/how-to-remove-blood-stains#:~:text=Apply%20a%20small%20amount%20of,hydrogen%20peroxide%20has%20rinsed%20out.

(Or in case you decide to off someone.) :D

You should've been there the day I stabbed myself with a fondue fork trying to open a package. Good times!

Eggs--I remember learning that overseas they don't fridge their eggs at all. We have to fridge them here because they are washed. But eggs are perfectly sealed when the hen lays them, and covered in "bloom" as well to keep them safe from bacteria. (now, aren't you hungry? LOL)

About six months ago I ordered delivery lunch from Umami, a poke and sushi burrito place. The order that came had more food than what I ordered and everything was completely different. Turns out Christopher P ordered lunch at the exact same time as me, Christopher B. I feel bad for Christopher P because that may have been lunch for two people and my lunch that he got was not enough. I tried to get the driver to come back but they ignored me.

I was always taught that if an egg floats in water, it's bad.

I've read this as well! I keep my eggs in the fridge forever - so every so often I feel like I should do some sort of test - and I try floating them, and toss them if they float.

Something to do with the buildup of gasses in the shell, I think?

No, the shell is permeable (so the developing chick can breathe). Water loss causes the egg contents to shrink and the water is replaced by air. My eggs are 6 months past the 'best before' date on the carton. I'm still eating them, cooked, of course. I make sure I don't buy cracked eggs and I throw out eggs that have changed colour. Alas, I don't see the colour change (and the smell!) until I crack the egg open.

Yes, I learned from my mom, that if you are going to use an older egg, best to crack it open over an empty bowl and not directly into your other ingredients - just in case it is bad!

Oh my goodness regarding your knife injury!! How scary! I hope it heals quickly!

Thanks for sharing that fact about eggs! My husband & I don't use them quickly & the expiration date seems to come up fast. We don't throw them out though, so it's good to know we're not consuming bad eggs!

Do the eggs there have use-by dates printed on them?

And I just read you can freeze eggs. Kooky!

I have seen eggs with the date stamped right on the shell! It's not the norm here in the US - but at least one brand does it!

I seem to recall reading about freezing eggs as well - I *feel* like I remember it saying you should not freeze them in the shell though?

Freezing eggs cracks the shell. I freeze ostrich eggs as an easy way to crack them open, to keep a shell that is easy to glue back together and to chop the yolks into smaller portions while still frozen for use later.

Putting eggs in water is a great test of freshness. If they lie on the bottom of a container of water--perfectly fresh. If one end touches the bottom of the container--older but still good. If the egg floats, chuck it.

And I freeze eggs at the time. I break them, stir them, then freeze in ziploc baggies for use in casseroles, making a quiche etc.

I hope your hand heals quickly, Susan! OUCH!
