I kind of wanted to try out the latest and greatest new knitting needles. They are sold on http://www.knitpicks.com/. So yesterday, I picked out what I wanted and I hit "Add to Cart".

Then I got the sign in screen (required... godihatethat) and I signed in. Only the Susan Dennis information I was presented with was a Susan Dennis in Ohio. Ooops. How did that happen?

I logged out (I thought) and created a new account. When I finished entering the information, I hit save and it saved and I clicked on "My Cart" and there was the Ohio Susan Dennis again!

Flag 2.

This is not good. I checked to see if I was logged into my new account and I was so I proceeded - DUMB - and changed Ohio to Washington, etc. and filled in my credit card number - DOUBLE DUMB and hit 'purchase'.

I got a nice screen telling me that I'd get a confirmation email in an hour.

When I did not, I went back and discovered that I could not get into any account and they site said they had no customers with my email address.

Flag 3.

I never did. So, last night, I sent an email to the web master - the only email address available on the site. I explained that I thought maybe there were some problems on their site and that I was particularly concerned as I had given them my credit card information.

It's now coming up on 24 hours and I have not heard squat from these people. Heck of a way to run an online business if you ask me.

Interestingly there is quite a debate about this place and others that sell directly to knitters (as opposed to through Local Yarn Shops). Many folks believe that doing business with them will mean the death of Local Yarn Shops.

I can't quite see giving them another shot anyway. Geesh. Sorry, [livejournal.com profile] janxknits, no review - I'm sticking with the turbos.

(yeah, I know, I'm mixing my metaphors...)

My yarn purchases absolutely have to be in person, as I have to see and touch the yarn. Buying it online is out of the question for what I do (weaving by hand). So at least for me, the yarn stores better stay in business.

Hmmm interesting needles. I've got some similar ones, but they are plasticy.

Did you cancel your credit card? I would hate tot hink they are one of the businesses that print the entire card number on an order slip and that it is going to someone else.

This is why I use MBNA ShopSafe, every card is a one time card and losing the number doesn't expose you or them to any undue risk. I had one today where they fucked up charging the card and it wouldn't let them amend the transaction, so I cancelled that card and gave them another one for the same amount and it only took five minutes and nobody cares about the cancelled card. I shop on-line all the time, but I have no great belief in the security of the web sites.
