In the middle of first grade - 1955, my family moved from Kansas City, MO to Winston-Salem, NC. I have vivid memories of the move. We drove in our station wagon. My sister cried the whole time. My mother was done with her (as were we all) and told her she would forget Kansas City soon enough. So, the whole trip, she wailed 'I still remember Kansas City!!!'. She was 5.
We got there finally and pulled up to this ENORMOUS (well, to my 6 year old eyes) house.
The key to my joy over the whole thing was the promise of a room to myself. I'd never again have to share a room with the 5 year old whiner. Not only that, as the oldest, I got to pick first.
Heady times.
We lived in that house for 10 years. I loved it, but it got too small and there was no air conditioning. Plus it was an old house with lots of old issues.
A few years ago, the house we moved into went on sale and there were lots of fabulous interior photographs. We sold that house in 1971. Different families had made improvements over time and it was fascinating to see.
Ever since, I've been hoping and waiting for the owners to sell that first house so I could finally see the inside. Today the listing went up!! No interior picks yet. But, already I can tell they will be probably unrecognizable. We had no great room. We had only 4 bedrooms and 2.5 bathrooms. And the basement was the home to a coal furnace - it was dark with a dirty floor. No playroom, that's for sure.
I hope that realtor gets those other photos up today.

Date: 2023-04-10 04:17 pm (UTC)I loved getting a chance to see what people have done to houses that I used to live in!
The first house I remember living in, we moved out of when I was 13 or so - a few of years later, it was for sale and there was an open house - I stopped in and took my younger brother through it. He didn't remember it at all, and the realtor was sort of bemused at a 16 year old coming to an open house - but I explained that we used to live there, so they let us tromp through the house - it was great!
After my mom died, we cleaned out our house and sold it - and a few years later it went up on the market and we got all the photos. They put a TON of money into updating and renovating - and my understanding is, right after they finished all the work, the husband died of a heart attack - and so he never got to live in the house they fixed up. And I guess the wife didn't want to live in that house without him or couldn't afford it - they put it up on the market pretty quickly.
