It all started a few months ago. My financial adviser somehow got on the topic of beneficiaries. He was explaining that if you list your beneficiaries directly (as opposed to 'estate of') it is faster and easier for them to collect. So I said that we'd better change mine to split everything 50/50 between my brother and my sister.

It's now currently all going to my sister who will then share... and I really don't care because - and here's the money point in all of this - I will be DEAD. But, whatever....

He said fine, he'd get me the papers to sign. I said fine. He never did. I reminded him next time I saw him and he said 'oh yeah - I'll get those to you'. He didn't. I called and reminded him. He did. 4 papers to sign with a 5th one that had a little post it note saying 'this one needs a medallion signature - it's a fancy notary - any bank will do it.'

Now, it is a month later and I have a list of banks that will NOT do it: Wells Fargo, Key Bank, Washington Mutual, Bank of America. I sent him that list and asked him what he suggested. He said he'd have his assistant find me somewhere and did I want it near home or work. I said home. Two days later I get an email saying that Washington Mutual will do it for $10 at their branch in Bellevue - which is really - not anywhere near home and not near work either when you don't have a car PLUS Washington Mutual already told me they wouldn't do it.

So, I took it to my friend, Susan, who said it was not like any medallion signature form she had witnessed before and didn't have the right places to fill in but she did the best she could. And I sent it in.

Mr. Financial Adviser called today to say that what she did won't cut it. He said that they had never had any trouble with banks not doing this before and yadda yadda... I said the whole thing was his fault anyway and I was tired of fucking around with it. If he finds a place to get it done that is convenient and he sends me another form, I'll give it a shot.

But, honestly, in this heat? This is way too much trouble. I didn't care before and now I care a lot less and when it all matters the most, I won't care at all because... as I pointed out... I'll be DEAD!

Ok, so here's how you make the whole medallion thing work. First your financial advisor's assistant calls their branch of Washington Mutual and reviews how much business they do with them. Then the branch manager volunteers to do the medallion thing.

But, it doesn't end there. Then the assistant gets the financial advisor's car and picks me up and takes me to the bank and we do the medallion thing which, of course, takes 5 mins - including the wait time. And then he takes me back to work.

Did I mention the assistant is about 25 and cute? Did I mention as an incentive to make the whole thing more fun, my financial adviser said 'take my car, why don't you'?

[livejournal.com profile] estis has a web cam that must look both ways! I just read that he has his cam on so I flipped over to see what he was up to and besides him and the faithful Scooter, I see a note saying Hi Susan! I'm hearing the theme from Twilight Zone!
