Fighting the day
Aug. 4th, 2004 01:08 pmSo the first thing that happens is that we're on the bus this morning and the driver announces that he's going to have to skip a few stops and go a completely different route because of a rollover accident on the bridge. It wasn't a bad thing but it did set the tone for the day so far... A new route is disconcerting...
I had planned to call Mom while walking from the bus to the office but as I got off the bus, I had an email from my brother that she was going into have her 'procedure' done. (No clue, don't ask. Something to do with her pacemaker I think.)
As I get to the office the phone rings. It's the social worker from the retirement place where Mom lives. She just wants to touch base with a family member. She touches. Very chatty. Some of what she says meshes with what Mom says and some doesn't. She tried to tell me that I need to talk to the person in charge of discharge at the hospital and the hospital contact there at the 'home'. I said... no, no, no... Talk to Polly. Polly is in charge. Polly is the Person. Talk to Polly. She got the message.
I come into the office and send a note to bro thanking him for the update. Get a note back saying Mom is bored and I should call her. So I do. She is - bored. She is #4 for whatever she is having done and they haven't done #1 yet. We chat. She told me nothing new but a lot of old stuff. She asked me to send a note to her cousin. I say fine.
Work turns out to be one little annoyance after another. I'm slapping them down but they are beginning to piss me off. Then another note from bro... Polly has called him to say that the 'home' is saying that Mom can't be discharged from the hospital unless she has someone stay with her. This is the opposite of what Mom says she was told earlier in the week. He is pissed because the 'someone' is his wife who had volunteered, been crushed when she was turned down and now has to inconvenience other people in order to do it... long tale, he's pissed.
It's a massive she said, she said, he said, she said....
I took a nice moment or two to wallow in gratefulness for being 3,000 miles and 3 time zones away. Thankyoujesus.
I haven't heard anything more in several hours. Don't know if this is good news or bad but do know that I'm 3,000 miles and 3 time zones away. Thankyoujesus. This may be my new mantra.
I can't get into Mom's machine - her IP hasn't ping'd live in about 4 hours. I'm hoping it's simply a Comcast problem that will be fixed. I need to get her cousin's email address. Not fatal but it would be nice to know that her computer is fine and all is well at least on that end.
Meanwhile Miko is cleaning. He's moved one of the webcams. At first I thought it was an accident but now, I think he's doing it on purpose and it's cracking me up - it's the third one under the first two on the page...
Here's one I grabbed from a minute ago...
