Happy Sunday
Feb. 18th, 2007 10:09 amBut the most fun for me is watching his progress. He wires up some kind of tracking thingie that I can watch on a web page. It's very cool and I'm addicted. I have no clues but a little spot on a map. If he's there for very long, I don't know if he's eating, sleeping, checking out a hot spot or what. It's so much fun to guess. This weekend he decided on Nevada (he starts from northern California) or that's the idea he started out with. I watched as he pass Truckie and wonder if that great breakfast restaurant is still there. He heads into Nevada and I watch him go across the state. He stopped last night either for a late dinner or to spend the night just this side of Elko and now he's smack in the middle of Elko maybe eating breakfast? He just left a comment on one of my entries so clearly he's found internet access.
I'm a stalker enjoying a vicarious road trip complete with stops along the way. It's great.

There was an article buried in my morning paper about something I predicted. Retirement homes and assisted living facilities are suffering from generation gaps. I knew it would happen. I saw it coming at Mom's place. The youngsters in their 70's do not have the time and patience or interest in the stuff that the old people in their 90's treasure.
It was starting before Mom died. Her friend, Carl, could never eat in the big, fancy dining room because the men were required to wear neckties. "I retired from neckties." He would get his meal at the informal cafe. They were very slow to get internet access. When Mom was in the independent living section, she wanted cable access to the internet. They had never had it out there and had to do a lot of rewiring to get her access. We raised holy hell until they finally did. Then when she moved into assisted living, cable access to the internet was not possible so she got the first DSL line out there. She did not have wireless (and neither did the administration of the place) but someone living on her hall did cause I could sit in her room and get the strongest signal you ever saw.
Their swimming pool was built for play. Mom asked me one day what a lap pool was and why they needed one. She said that there was a group of residents raising holy hell to get the swimming pool replaced with a lap pool. They added the second gym/workout room last year.
The old people wanted their play pool and the kids wanted their lap pool. And that was a year ago. The article in the paper this morning sounded like the same scene is being played out everywhere.

The publishing system at work is still down so it looks like I have another day off. It's actually costing me a bundle. I could have easily wracked up a good 12 hours or more of work time this weekend. That's nearly half a mortgage payment. Fortunately I have been careful. I have the money set aside for real estate taxes in April, income taxes (although I'm not sure what that tally is going to be exactly) in April, I've already paid for the new computer and I had extra hours in the first part of this month. So, it's not a major money issue and I've got plenty to keep me amused. Plus two of the groups who really waited until the last minute and shouldn't have will now get a valuable less and that appeals to the mean side of me.

Now I'm off to find an Outlook download of the Mariners schedule. The first broadcast - radio - is March 1 and the first TV is March 15. They are going to suck this year but sucky baseball is better than no baseball at all!
