Neighbor Ron called and asked if I could come down and answer a question 'before I call this Microsoft guy back.' Uh oh.
He said that when his browser fails he always check the 'send Microsoft the info' button but he never hears back and I explain that he won't and he says 'But I did, today!'
Yep, scammed. I quickly went to restore on his computer and discovered he had no real valid restore points. Only a couple of ones from November that said they didn't have all the files. I started up one anyway figuring he was already fucked and getting more fucked wasn't going to hurt more.
I explained that Microsoft is not going to call him and have him install stuff on his computer but, if they did, he should always get their info, hang up and call the Microsoft main number. Microsoft, banks, credit card companies... anyone. I explained that if they were legit, they'd give him the info and if not, they would hang up on him.
While we were waiting for his computer to come back up, the phone rang and it was his friend from Microsoft. I took the phone and oh so politely explained that we wanted to do a simple verification. I explained that I was going to call the main Microsoft number so I needed info from him about how I could get them to direct me back to him. He said 'I just told you who I am' and I said 'I understand, I just want to verify that.' And he said 'ok, have a nice day, ma'm' and hung up.
Nice to have him prove my point but poor Ron. On the up side, his computer was all fucked up before the call. It's 2 or 3 years old and has crap on it like you wouldn't believe. It has every toolbar ever made ... 'I don't even want those - I don't want Yahoo (which he pronounces YAYWhoo) or any of them. He really only uses the browser so a refresh will be simple. He has a guy who works on computers as a second job - he mainly goes hardware but I told him to call him anyway - get all his CD's and stuff that came with the computer together and let the guy redo him from scratch.
I'm sure I'll be called back in to hook up the printer or Clear or something but at least he's now got a project for a while which Ann will appreciate.

We had a little project meeting this morning and, at least for now, I'm going to be taking Wednesdays and Fridays off! (Starting Friday.) Should be fun and nice to have whole days where I'm not on the hook.
---
Oh yeah!
machupicchu just sent me a tweet that Big Bang Theory got picked up for 3 years! Seems like the first time it got a multi year deal and now another one. I am very glad to hear it. I do wish it would move back to Mondays, tho.
---
I need to download the manual to my new TV and study up. Maybe that's what I'll do on Friday... my new day off! Now I have to get back to work!

Wanna check?
Jan. 12th, 2011 06:19 pmI have a new web cam and so new web cam page set up that is kind of giving me a few fits. It should not, but I *think* that when you first hit the page, it asks for your credentials. And it shouldn't.
So, wanna hit the URL and test it? I have instructions on the page but they may be too far down the page to be of use. http://www.susandennis.com/webcam.htm
EDIT: back to the drawing board... :)
---
I got the ship notice for my TV today and so sent Amazon the Price Match, you owe me $100 note. I will be interested in how that all shakes out.
I need to figure out what to do with my current TV. I can't decide if it's worth the hassle of selling it - I couldn't ask too much for it since I'm pretty sure it's on the way to broken. If I do, sell it... Craig's list? Seattle LJ community? BB notice in this building? I think that last one is the worst idea. I could donate it but I don't - off the top - know of a place that wants it and will come pick it up. I have some time to conjur.
---
I had an exhausting battle with server tools this afternoon trying to get work done. We finally ended about 6 ... in a draw. whew. I'm looking forward to an evening of junk TV.
