May. 18th, 2014
Good morning from the dark
May. 18th, 2014 07:45 amThe power was supposed to go off at 3 am but it didn't until 5:45. It got instantly hot and stuffy when the ceiling fan went off. I finally got back to sleep and slept until my phone alarm went off at 7. Sadly, it did not kick the radio on like it should have but, a bit of fiddling got NPR. I set the phone to be a hotspot to get internet to my laptop.
So, here I sit in the hot and dark, listening to the news. They promised lights back on by 8. It's 7:37. I want my fan back on and my coffee.
Also I just realized that I'll miss the beginning of CBS Sunday Morning and that's a real bitch cause I think it's the design show. GRRRR
After I get juice back, I think I'll make some breakfast here. The baseball game is on at 11. And that's about it for the day.
The next power outage is tomorrow at 3 am and it lasts until 6. I think I'm going to move my car from the garage to the street this evening. I don't want to take a chance on not being able to get out of the garage in time to get to the pool tomorrow. There are no games or much of anything going on in the neighborhood so there should be plenty of parking which is free on Sundays.
15 more minutes to go... I sure hope.

Noon is the new 8 am
May. 18th, 2014 09:13 amI just got an email from the building manager that Seattle City Light now says that the power won't be back on until noon. Nice. Not!
The game starts at 11 but is on am radio and I only have fm radios in the house. My little cellphone is doing the job of an army today. I need to make sure I can keep it charged up for another 3 hours. This is not making me a happy camper.
I could go out. Going down the stairs is no problem. BUT 1. I'm not sure I can get the car out of the garage and 2. I'm not sure how far I can get on foot and 3. There is no way I can get back here until the power is back on. I cannot climb 4 flights of stairs.
So I'm here for the duration. The good news is I have milk and cereal is an acceptable breakfast. And I have grapefruit. No coffee is not that much fun but not tragic either.
At least I have a flush toilet.

I am not a nice person and I don't care
May. 18th, 2014 12:15 pmSo my neighbor, Ann, called me this morning about 9 to ask if I knew anything about the power. I told her that the building manager had sent an email saying it would not be on until noon and that the Seattle City Light's website says 2. We discussed that because of the stairs to climb, I could not go out. She said they couldn't either.
Then at noon Ann came into my living room to tell me that she had been down to pick up coffee for her and her husband (thanks, so much for even offering to bring me any... ) And she wanted me to show her how to send an email to Tija who's partner is the HOA president. Tija and Sandy are away for the weekend but Ann thought if Tija knew that there was no power she could tell Sandy who might call somebody.
Her iPad wouldn't send email and her phone wouldn't work (although it seemed to work fine when she called me)...
WTF does not even cover it.
Oh and, when she came in, I was listening to the baseball game. If I just waltzed uninvited into someone's home, I think I'd maybe apologize for interrupting... instead she wanted to know the score.
Without being blood drawing rude, I did not encourage her to stay and visit. Deep down inside, I am not a people person. On the surface, most of the time I can cover that up. I do not think I covered it up too well just now. And I don't care.

5 pm is the new 8 pm
May. 18th, 2014 01:45 pmYes, sports fans, the new Power On ETA is 5 pm. It's now 1:30. The building manager sent out a better (more informational) note and this time included info that indicates this situation is not bringing out the best in the condo population.
So now I'm in Counting My Blessings Mode.
1. Whatever we can do as customers - bitch, moan, sue, file for damages, will be handled for me by my neighbors.
2. I have a charged up phone with backup battery power.
3. I have wifi via said phone.
4. I have enough of 2 and 3 above to last until 5 fairly easily.
5. I have an AM radio that is bringing me a clear signal (not an easy feat in this building) of the Mariner game and they are winning.
6. I have food - good food that doesn't even need cooking.
7. I have no where I have to be except here.
8. I have no one here who's bitching I have to listen to.
9. It's not nearly as hot out (and so in) as it could be and was earlier this week.
I pulled out one of the airbeds so that I'd have a place to stretch out in front of the door where I can get some air. The other airbed is more comfortable but it needs a blow job and needs electricity for said blow job. So...
10. I have a nice place to stretch out in the cool to read my book.
3 hours and 15 minutes to go. Unless 5 pm becomes 8 pm or later even. Sigh.

And we're back... and we're not...
May. 18th, 2014 05:17 pmAnd the saga continues. The lights came back on at 3:50. I got the computers restarted and the bed back to flat. The TiVos came on successfully and I calmed down clocks on the stove and microwave. Oh and I peed with the light! (The only windows in this place are in the very front of the house - the living room. Without power the back end and both bathroom are black.)
And then at 4:25 the power went out again. This time the outage website said restoration ETA was 11 pm.
But at 5:05, the power came back again.
This is getting old.
It's one thing to deprive me of CBS Sunday Morning but when you threaten me with no Good Wife finale, you are talking some serious shit.
However, fingers crossed, maybe... we're good til 3 am tomorrow. I abandoned the moving the car thing. They will have to have the garage doors open for people going to work. I've already organized everything I might need in case I get back from swimming and can't get in for a while. All's cool. And I'm starving. I'm planning on cooking while it's possible.

Ok, my bad real bad
May. 18th, 2014 06:04 pmOnce the power was on for good, and I got dinner, I realized what a whiny unreasonable bitch I was about the whole thing. I still think Ann should have asked me if I wanted coffee - kidding!!! But, really, I was just totally unreasonably stressed about the whole thing almost from the time I first heard about it. Then as it went on and on and on my temperament went downhill.
Shit happens and really no harm was done. I just reacted very badly. Tomorrow will be better if only because 1. I won't be at all surprised if the power does not come back when promised and 2. I have a game plan for if it doesn't.
I won't be happier but maybe I won't embarrass myself.
----
I will say that spending a day without the webcams on turned out to be pretty interesting to me. I was acutely aware that they weren't there. I made a mess at one point - lunch plate, tissues everywhere, the airbed sloppily in the middle of the room with pillows on the floor. At one point I thought 'I should clean this shit up.' and the I thought 'No hurry, no one can see!' And I didn't get dressed until it got too cold.
I think the webcams keep me honest, tidy and more engaged beyond me than I realized. I kind of like that and knowing it.
