This morning's swim was an hour of frustration. Having to breathe is fucking up my stroke. GRRRRR. And then there was a woman sharing my lane who was slower than I am (which is pretty fucking slow) but doing flip turns which kind of cracked me up. Meanwhile I was trying to concentrate on using my other side and/or both sides to breathe while staying out of her way. About halfway in, my arm tangled with the hard plastic lane line. Now I have a blood bruise bigger than an Apple watch and, it broke the skin. ARUGH.

It's not supposed to get horribly hot today so I am venturing out. There's a new little biscuit cafe in Pike Place Market that opened yesterday. They have country ham biscuits on their menu. Country ham is a thing - it's a specially cured ham found in Virginia and a couple of places in North Carolina. Seattle is not big on ham and really does not 'get' it at all. But they really don't get country ham. There are places that have it on the menu and it turns out to be sugar cured ham, or not cured ham, or off the shelf whatever ham. Never country ham. The owners of this new pace are from North Carolina so they better know what they are talking about. I am going to find out today.

There is real country ham in Seattle. I know two different butchers who sell it but, they only sell the whole ham which is huge and pretty much require a mortgage. My brother always brings me slices whenever he visits. I can order it online and sometimes do. But, the idea of being able to just walk into a place and order a ham biscuit tickles me.

So that's that I'm doing today. At least that's the plan.

The first part of the adventure was the discovery of Zoey's hiding place! I knew she had a new one but I hadn't found it yet. Turns out it was on top of my sunhat which now has it's natural khaki covered in cat fur. Nice. I wore it anyway because the sun was out in full force. But, it was surprisingly cool which was heaven.

The biscuit place is cute and teeeny tiny. It's exactly where [livejournal.com profile] badrobot68 had his shop. There is a kitchen with giant fridge and ovens and workspace and counter and and washing up area and shelves and a table and chairs and a counter with stools. The eating area does not feel crowded. It actually makes a nice place to nosh with lots of very excellent people watching. But working there has to be a nightmare. There were 6 people working today in a space barely big enough for 3.

The ham was hanging right by where you order so there was no question that this was the real deal. The ham cured in Smithfield, NC is the very best country ham you can get. That's about $100 worth o' ham hanging right there.

The biscuits are good - not amazingly fabulous but good. They aren't buttery enough and need a little salt. And, for my taste, they are too big by almost half. But, my country ham biscuit was excellent.

They also have pimento cheese as an option for your biscuit. This is an EXCELLENT choice except, the description says that it is homemade and includes baby carrots. CARROTS???? in your pimento cheese? Are they nuts??? Yes.

It had been a while since I had been in the center of town and a long while since I've been there in tourist season.

It was fun. Lots of people lost and looking for help. The ferris wheel looked great today when you peeked between the buildings.

As I got right by my back door, I passed a couple pulling a rolling bag and studying a map and talking about going to Cherry Street Coffee. And then they set out to get there by the very longest way possible (the map is confusing)... I stopped them and apologized for eavesdropping but pointed them to the more direct way.

Now I need to get to work on this cat hat.

My brother has a Drop Cam that points to the driveway of his shop north of Austin in Georgetown, Texas. They are having a monsoon today. Link to live video.

Yikes!

The Church in Charleston, SC that is the site of today's shooting is a couple of blocks from my parents' house. On a Friday night, they would have been out walking home from a concert or the theater or dinner or a neighbor's... and may well have walked right by there.

Of course, they moved out of that house in 1998 and they've both been dead for more than a decade but still.... creepy to see their neighborhood in twitter photos of 'shooting scene'.
