When I tell Alexa, Treadmill, she starts the timer on the clock on the wall in front of the treadmill. Yesterday, she started a timer but not on the clock. Weird. After my treadilling, I tested it out with some short timers and they went to the clock just fine. So I figured glitch. Fixed.
When I tell Alexa good night, she turns off all the lights in the house and fires up the ceiling fan. Last night I told her good night and she blinked and nothing. We repeated this a couple of times. But, when I rebooted her she just could not connect. hmmmm. The Echo dot in the bathroom also wasn't connected. The living room Echo was up and operational. hmmm I checked the mesh network and the hallway hub was on the fritz. Fuck. I unplugged and replugged it and nothing. Crap. It's the Google Wifi system and it's one of those things that works perfectly so no need to understand or troubleshoot or do anything. So there was no guidance how to fix. Crap.
Finally, I went to bed and as I was going to sleep I was, in my mind, digging the old Eero's out of storage and setting them up instead.
This morning I woke up and Google had come to its senses on its own. All was fine and good and operational. Whew. I now suspect that hub had been out for a while. Oh well. Fixed now.
So, since I don't have to redo my entire network today, that frees up some time. hahahaha
I have the next installment of my crochet instructions that just arrived via email. The baseball game is at 5. I'm thinking Chinese for lunch. I'm ready to re-try that Mongolian Beef that was too spicy last time. One more shot. This time with VERY MILD in the instructions. And fingers crossed.

Misc Miscellany
May. 7th, 2021 01:22 pmI did not end up getting Chinese because just as I was getting ready to place my order, Instagram implied that Costco had iced cookies for Mother's Day. So I hopped into the car and went Costco-ing instead. More steps. Turns out no cookies at my Costco but holy fuck there were a buttload of people! I've gotten very used to Old People Hour there where the store is empty. This was not Old People Hour.
But, it was also not a hassle. I just had to make sure I didn't run anyone down. They did have two things that were on my Costco list and I wanted to check out their lasagna which I remembered to do so it was pretty much a win trip.
I thought I'd grab a whole pizza on my way out but that was clearly a NFW. Everybody and his brother were waiting for their order in the food place. No biggie.
I went out to the car and ordered through the McDonad's app and stopped there on the way home and they brought it to my car. So nice.
I do wish Costco had a little Home Depot in them. Yesterday, I looked online for what I wanted at Home Depot and not only found it, I could see how many they had in my store AND- here'e the prize - what row and where on that row it was! And, there's a little 'text to me' link. So when I got to Home Depot, I just checked my texts and was able to go right to what I wanted. Very very cool.
And speaking of very cool, I am listening to Andy Weir's latest novel. He wrote The Martian which was great and Artemis which was pretty good, too. And now he has a new one out that didn't sound very interesting but what the heck... Project Hail Mary. The reader - a guy named Ray Porter - is magical. The book is good but he makes it good x10. I looked up other books he's read and none look interesting but you can bet I'll be checking some out just to hear him again.
Biggie is having a difficult day. He really wanted to bite me this morning. I removed the opportunity but he didn't do it but he's been on edge all day. His calming collar is 2 stops away and it cannot get here soon enough.

Birthday Answers - the last one
May. 7th, 2021 03:12 pmKind of a weird one to end on because my normal cheery self gets buried in old wrongs... But, hey, I feel better getting to bitch about it.
Happy Birthday to me!

What was it like being a woman in tech in the early days? Did you experience harassment? Mansplaining? Being mistaken for a secretary?
You know, I really didn’t run into those issues. I was the only woman a lot of the time and I considered it a huge advantage. No one ever forgot me. They didn’t expect much so a win from me counted double and was noted. I took advantage every time I could and worked it. Being mistaken for a secretary was a good thing. People told secretaries all kinds of cool secrets. I honestly never had men talk to me as if I was an idiot. Or at least not more than once.
To be honest, the discrimination I ran into over and over again and that still pisses me off today is because I was a single person and had no kids. People with families got time off for kid shit and spouse shit who did their job plus my own? I did. “You can take on this extra work because you don’t have to go home to your family, ok? Thanks, bye.” Over and over and over again. With never a thank you or acknowledgement.
Twice (two different places/bosses) I was passed over for a raise because I had no kids/family. One guy flat out told me my co-worker was getting more money than me because she needed it more. “She’s a single mother, you know.” Fuck yeah I know because I am the one who does her work when she’s taking her stupid kids to soccker and the dentist. I was doing half of her job and all of mine but she got paid more because she couldn’t grasp birth control or couples therapy. In another situation, it was a guy. “He has a family to support. You understand.” Actually, no, asshole, I do not understand.
And my generous corporate benefits packages which were always fed to me as part of my compensation, had far too many children and family benefits in it. I was forced to ‘pay’ for these but got no benefit.
Grinds my gears even now. If you couldn’t tell :)
